With over 3,500 coffee shops and €321m in revenue, France’s coffee shop boom is brewing success
If you had asked me seven years ago what I thought about coffee, I would have told you that I’d never drink it in a million years. Back in the days, rather than going into coffee shops, I was far more likely to visit tea shops – especially “bubble tea shops”. Ironically, now, while I do enjoy the occasional bubble tea, I would rather go to a cute coffee shop, take some pictures, have a chat with my friends while enjoying my oat milk latte and a delicious cake.
In France, particularly over the past few years, there has been a booming trend of coffee shop opening, and more especially specialty coffee shops. There are at least 3,500 coffee shops across the country, that generate over 321 million euros in revenue. This highlights a market that is particularly dynamic and influential, contributing to a growing coffee shop culture. While chain coffee shops still do attract their fair share of customers, there has been a gradual shift toward supporting local, independent coffee shops that put a special highlight on quality and authentic connections.
This market is set to develop even further, as observed thanks to social media, particularly on TikTok. People are constantly on the lookout for a good coffee shop – one that will serve excellent coffee paired with delicious pastries, that is worth the money. At the same time, more entrepreneurs are documenting their journey to opening their own coffee shop, inspiring others and contributing to the rise of new coffee shops opening each month. For now, the coffee shop trend is sure here to stay.
